How Blinds Work

Below is some information on the workings of some of our most popular blinds.

  • Roller blinds work with the aid of a simple chain that's looped around a chain mechanism. Pull the blind chain closest to the window to raise the roller fabric, or pull the blind chain closest to you to reverse the motion and lower the fabric.
  • Automatic or motorised blinds are blinds that are electronically controlled via a remote control, sensor, smartphone, tablet or even a third-party home-automation or home hub system. Whenever you want to raise or lower your remote blinds, you don't have to worry about using a manual chain or corded system, simply use the remote control, wall switch or even your smartphone, depending on the automated system. We offer motorised roller blinds, vertical blinds, Roman blinds, and Venetian blinds with remote controlled operation. If you have these styles already but with manual operation, they can also be retro-fitted for your convenience. You can find out more about the benefits of our automatic / motorised blinds here.
  • Roman blinds work the same way as roller blinds. They work with an easy-to-operate blind chain system.
  • Venetian blinds are one of the styles found to be the trickiest to operate, but once you know how it's very simple. These are controlled with both a wand and a pulley cord system. The wand is twisted to tilt the slats to your desired angle, while the cords work to raise and lower the slats by pulling the strings downward to lift up the blinds, continuing to pull until you reach the top of the window, or until you reach a good stopping point. Then, you can let the strings/cords go.To lower the blinds, pull the blind cord down at a 45-degree angle. Then, begin to loosen your grip to let the cord slide through your hand. Once the blinds have been lowered to your desired level, adjust the string so that it's parallel to the window frame.
  • Vertical blinds feature vertical fabric panels (known as slats) that are clipped to a sliding track and operated with a wand or cords on older blinds. Each of these slats are joined together by individual weights to ensure each one is evenly weighted across the length of the track. To work vertical blinds, rotate the wand counter-clockwise to open the slats and allow light into the room. To close the blinds, twist the wand clockwise. The wand can also be pushed across the length of your window/door to move all of the panels of the side and reveal more of the glass - improving your view in the process!
